At Sponsor-ed Primary School our students learn how to learn. We provide our students with a core of essential learning where they develop the capacity to research think and communicate their ideas in different ways. From their very first day at school students see themselves as high achievers. They are authors, readers, mathematicians and inquirers. The explicit teaching model of instruction at Sponsor-ed Primary School is underpinned by the latest educational research. Key concepts and skills are explicitly taught and revised with students on a daily basis. Every day our students participate in blocks of learning. This includes a two-hour reading and writing blocks and a one-hour mathematics session.

To be a successful reader a student must be able to both confidently decode and understand a text. At Sponsor-ed Primary School the teaching of reading comprehension strategies goes hand-in-hand with teaching decoding skills. Effective comprehension strategies are explicitly taught from the very first day at school. Students are taught both the craft of writing and writing conventions. Mathematics teaching is based on providing concrete experiences that enable students to manipulate a range of materials. Our teachers deliver learning through the gradual release of responsibility lesson structure.

In addition, our students participate in specialised instruction in Visual Arts, Physical Education, STEM, and Korean.

At Sponsor-ed Primary School we hold high expectations for all our young learners. Our teachers work collaboratively in teams to support the diverse abilities and interests of students. Students are challenged and given opportunities to apply their learning in different contexts. Students who require additional time and support are assisted by a team of teachers.

Our Inquiry Curriculum enables our students to explore world-wide and age-old concepts from many different perspectives, encourages them to be empathetic and thoughtful learners and provides the opportunity for wonderful exploratory activities; everything from hosting bazaars, creating mini-movies and engaging in art and design. Inquiries include-Sustainability, Identity, Creativity and Curiosity.

Concepts are explored developmentally from Foundation through to Year Six, so all students explore the same concept at the same time, allowing for whole school immersion and cross-level collaboration. This developmental approach ensures that content is not repeated, but is instead ‘scaffolded’ to match the maturity and readiness of students at each level.

Our teachers focus on the learner- their interests, their point of learning need and their strengths. All decisions about teaching flow from this focus point. They ask: What is it we want our students to know? How will we know if our students are learning? How will we respond when students do not learn? Our teachers observe, listen and research side by side with our students. The success criteria for every lesson are explicit. The learning intention of the lesson and the success criteria is what guides the teacher talk during the lesson. Our teachers use: elaborating, reflective, probing and clarifying questions routinely in all lessons.

Excellence in learning requires strong home-school partnerships. We provide clear and continuous communication and encourage parent participation in the learning process.
